The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark preserves a stretch of railroad that loops in a semicircle around a difficult stretch of the valley that the line needed to cross. Sporting a wonderful scenic look out over the valley and surrounded by mountains on the backside, the view from the rails can still be seen by taking the "Funicular" incline trolley right up to the tracks or hiking the steep steps up from the visitor grounds. Family trips to this place are common in the summer, and best accompanied by a picnic overlooking the nearby lake. The horseshoe curve is directly west of south Altoona, a short distance past Lake Altoona and the Kittanning Reservoir.
Open daily sunrise - sunset.
Free entry. Funicular ride prices vary, call for details.
