Once a major rail station holding large repair and maintenance facilities for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona's economic and social status was, for years, dependent on this popular form of transportation. Today, the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum preserves this memory with a vast series of displays and exhibits that bring this railroading history to life. Surrounding the museum is an assortment of railroad cars and maintenance contraptions; these offer a great series of railroad vehicles for fans to see and learn about. Located right beside the railroad tracks, the museum is also close to the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, where a repository of photographs sponsored by the railroad company are held.
